Terminology Glossary
- 1D Barcode
- The linear barcode that uses a series of variable-width lines and spaces to encode the data. The AgriGuide barcode is GS1 standard EAN/UPC types of barcodes to satisfy different business requirements. This code is commonly found on consumer goods.
- 2D Data Matrix
- Square barcode on product packaging that links to AgriGuide digital information.
- Biopesticides
- Biopesticides are active substances as defined by Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, derived from nature, either naturally occurring or synthesised, provided they are structurally similar* and functionally identical* to their naturally occurring counterparts.
- Compliance Guidance
- Real-time instructions ensuring legal and safe pesticide application.
- Data Model
- A structured framework for organising and storing information.
- Digital Label
- Digital version of plant protection product labels accessible via smartphone or web-based scanning for real-time usage guidance.
- Direction for Use
- “Instructions on how to safely and effectively use a product”
- Electronic Record-Keeping
- Electronic capture and storage of farm activity data for compliance and traceability using a machine-readable format as defined in Article 2(13) of Directive (EU) 2019/1024. Please see EU Regulation 2023/564 as well.
- EU Regulation 1107/2009
- Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 sets the EU framework for authorising, marketing, using, and monitoring plant protection products.
- EU Regulation 2023/564
- Regulation implementing Article 67 of EC Regulation 1107/2009 requiring digital record-keeping of pesticide usage data from 1 January 2026.
- Farm Management Information System (FMIS)
- FMIS (also known as FMS) is software helping farmers manage agricultural operations.
- Field-Level Precision
- Targeted farming decisions tailored to specific fields or zones.
- Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)
- Globally unique number for a specific product or service, i.e. article code, developed by the international organization GS1. Within the EU, this code was previously known as European Article Number (EAN)
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a comprehensive approach to managing pests that prioritises ecological and economic considerations. It involves carefully selecting and integrating various pest control methods to minimise risks to human health and the environment, while keeping pesticide use at levels justified by economic and ecological factors. Since 2014, IPM has been a legal requirement under the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive (SUD).
- JSON File
- Lightweight data format for sharing structured information.
- Machine-Readable
- Data in a format that can be automatically read and processed by a computer, such as CSV, JSON, XML, etc. Machine-readable data must be structured data. “Flat” PDF documents are not considered machine-readable.
- No-Spray Buffer Zone
- Untreated area between the treated area and an area to be protected.
- Plant Protection Products (PPPs)
- Products consisting of, or containing, active substances, safeners or synergists, intended for one or more of the following uses:
(a) protecting plants or plant products against harmful organisms, unless the primary purpose is hygiene rather than protection;
(b) influencing the life processes of plants, such as substances affecting growth, other than as a nutrient;
(c) preserving plant products, insofar as such substances or products are not subject to specific Community provisions on preservatives;
(d) destroying undesired plants or parts of plants, except algae, unless applied on soil or water to protect plants;
(e) checking or preventing undesired growth of plants, except algae, unless applied on soil or water to protect plants.
- Quality Check
- Systematic review ensuring accuracy of digitised information.
- Risk Mitigation Measure
- Risk mitigation measures (RMMs) are conditions of use designed to reduce exposure and thus risk to humans or the environment. Examples include personal protective equipment, buffer zones, drift-reducing nozzles, and no-spray buffer zones.
- Smart Farming
- Modern agriculture using digital technologies to optimise crop management.
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Farming practices balancing productivity, environmental protection, and economic viability.
- Traceability
- Ability to track agricultural inputs throughout the farming process.
- Vegetative Filter Strip
- A vegetative filter strip (VFS) is an untreated, vegetated area used to reduce surface runoff between the treated area and the water body to be protected.
